The Department of Parks and Wildlife manages beekeeper access on Crown land throughout Western Australia.
There are 3,266 current apiary authorities on all land tenures.
About 2,071 of these are on land managed by the department, which contain some 75 per cent of the honey resource in Western Australia.
Approximately 90 beekeepers are registered to collect honey from these apiary authorities.
Authorities can be issued for up to seven years, depending on the land tenure, and include conditions relating toland management requirements, water catchment guidelines, dieback control and fire prevention.
Parks and Wildlife can grant apiary authorities to keep an apiary on land vested in the Conservation Commission, subject to consultation with the Commission and approval from the Minister for Environment. The department also seeks the approval of other government agencies and other land managers when applications are received for the placement of beehives on other lands.
