Due to its remoteness, the Kimberley is one of the great frontiers for scientists to document its landscape, seascape and biological values. The central and south-eastern Kimberley, the vast tracts of Aboriginal land along the north-west coast and most of the coastal waters remain largely unexplored.

Research on the marine environment and islands is being funded via the Kimberley Science and Conservation Strategy (with $12 million over 6 years provided to the WA Marine Science Institution to fund 24 marine research projects) along with terrestrial monitoring of management actions implemented under the Landscape Conservation Initiative.
